LEARNING TO BREATHE
Fiction
Set in suburban Michigan in 1971, Learning to Breathe tells the story of 11-year-old Winnie, independent, quirky and desperately grieving the tragic death of her mother. Her 15-year-old brother, Carl, can’t help her, and her attorney father is devastated himself. When trouble at school gets Winnie kicked out, her father sends her, against her will, to spend the summer with Aunt Gloria at the family lake house. But the weight of Winnie's grief is too much for her and when she decides there’s no reason to go on, assistance arrives just in time, in the form of her mother. But a ghost can only do so much. Eventually, Winnie must accept her mother’s death, forgive her father for letting her down when she needed him the most, and help heal their broken family.
